I'm not sure how easy this will be to get ahold of, but if you can, rent Tuvalu. The movie is cinema escapism at its best. Strange, stylistic and very entertaining. For you, a Tuvalu review. Trivia. Tuvalu, the island nation, is the bearer of the .tv domain name. In late 2001, Verisign paid $45 million for the .tv Corporation International. .tv domain names begin at $1000/yr. Tuvalu is also sinking into the sea.

Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha is a hell of a story. I began to read it the other night before bed and the next thing I knew it was 7am. It's been a while since I've been drawn so completely into a book. Aside from the havoc doing so plays on my sleep schedule, I love it when that happen. Interesting sidenote, Mineko Iwasaki, the geisha credited and thanked in his book(an interview with her led to a rewrite of the novel), sued Golden for breach of contract and a tarnished reputation, claiming that he had promised to keep her identity a secret. She's since published her own book, detailing her history as a geisha during the 1960s and 70s.

From a posting in the Quality Control thread on televisionwithoutpity.com: I am still waiting for the Scoobies and other hangers on to realize that only good manners can defeat evil. I posted on this back when Giles said the FE could not physically manifest itself and others here have said it also. Where the dickens are the handshake police? If FE can be people who are dead/have died, it would seem that every meetings of Scoobies, Spike, Anya, SITs and other hangers on should involve a handshake. Or a hug if they want to be New Age/West Coast about it. If the FE defeats them, it will be because of their lack of basic manners. I await their belated discovery that thank you notes and timely RSVPs can forestall all sorts of hellish occurences.
I suppose it's for the better if this season is to be the last of Buffy. Although, with the end of the show(and Farscape as well), we're going to have to find ourselves some new event televison. I'll miss Buffy nights more than Buffy itself.

I read Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom during breaks from work this week, and it's a hell of a book. Download a copy and see for yourself(if ya like it, the dead tree version is available at amazon). The closest thing I can think of to Down and Out in style would probably be Peter Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy(otherwise known as some of the best sci-fi I've ever read while at the same time having the worst ending I've encountered in any genre or medium ever, period). In fact, if you haven't read the Night's Dawn books(which I recommend) and are thinking about it, go ahead and tear the last 20 pages from the final volume before you get started; in this case, wondering what happens is a lot better than actually knowing. Note that the similarities are in style only. Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom doesn't suffer from a horrible ending. Its ending was quite nice. Anyway, read it, cause I wanna talk about whuffie.

Don't forget, season four of Farscape continues tonight at 8pm on Sci-Fi. Do me a favor, if you've got yerself a Neilsen box, turn that baby on. Hey all, there's a new Apple browser called Safari! That's right, you heard it here first. Check out Hyatt's weblog for more in-depth goodness. Oolong the balancing rabbit has died. I am sad. The image of the rabbit vigil(including a mini balancing rabbit) is especially touching. Many many many Oolong photos can be found here. There's also a Mefi story here.

NationStates. Based on a book by the creator, this clever webgame allows you to create yer very own county and lead it through growth and decline based on how you handle daily issues. If you were ever a fan of the old BBS era games, you'll probably get a kick out of this. [via mefi] The Republic of Flummox
Flag: Seychelles
"The Dating Capital of the World"
UN Category: Left-Leaning College State
Civil Rights: Excellent
Economy: Good
Political Freedoms: Excellent
The Republic of Flummox is a small, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its absence of drug laws. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 8 million enjoy extensive civil freedoms, particularly in social issues, while business tends to be more regulated. The large government juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 28%, but much higher for the wealthy. A substantial private sector is led by the Uranium Mining industry, followed by Beef-Based Agriculture and Furniture Restoration. The nation is ravaged by daily union strikes. Crime is moderate, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Flummox's national animal is the rook, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the token.

Neat, MT works fine on the hiptop. After all the horror stories I've heard about local T-Mobile service, I've found myself pleasantly surprised at the quality of service here in Vegas. Hello from the Double Down. Hmm. Lots of Clash tonight.
