It smells like Christmas outside.

"Looking for the candystore?"
"We took it over!"
"Can't find the arcade?"
"That's cause it dosn't exist anymore!"
"This isn't kiddyland! This is TI! where the adults come and play!"
"Come stay and play! The real treasure is inside!"

Good God. Treasure Island reveals its new image, garnering rave reviews. How much more patronizing could their marketing possibly get?

I'd wager that in the years ahead when the current crop of casinos begin to be ushered into the demolition line, TI will be one of the first to go.

Okay, I'll give em one thing. Their new website is probably the best of the local properties, not that the competition is fierce(and they seem to have fixed the menu errors in Safari since the launch last week, kudos to the MGM-Mirage design team), but now that the bar has been raised I don't think they'll hold that crown for long.

By the way, Las Vegas has a hockey team.

Opening game was a blast. Wranglers ended their first home game with one hell of a first line, a solid goalie, a strong penalty killing team and a stupid generic alienmonster mascot.

Catch a game if you can. Tickets are cheap, and Las Vegas sports franchises need all the help they can get.

Electronic Gaming Monthly stuck a bunch of kids in front of classic game consoles and wrote down the kooky things they said about them.
[Thanks Wil, I needed to feel old today.]

Just wondering, but did anyone out there enjoy Solaris?

Hell, when I rented the dvd the girl working behind the counter pleaded with me to like the movie, as almost everyone she'd encountered had loathed it. Someone had even gone so far as to scrawl "This movie sucks!" in permanent marker across the front of the dvd case.

When I'd heard it was dull, I assumed that meant Soderbergh had used the same (at times painfully)plodding pacing that Tarkovsky used in the original movie. While I enjoyed Tarkovsky's version overall and appreciate the idea of slower pacing in order to increase the impact of dramatic moments, there are spans of time in that film that are just mind-numbingly dull. Chop an hour out of it and hell, it'd be a great film. Well, in addition to incorporating his own vision of the story, that's exactly what Soderbergh did.

I understand that this movie isn't for everyone, but the backlash still surprises me. Was it the way it was advertised? The lack of explanations throughout the film? Or was it the George Clooney audience, folks who might've felt themselves tricked into seeing an art film?

...

Also, I'm fairly confident that the repeating up 'n down sound heard near the end of the movie is the hyperspace effect from Star Raiders.

Matt Rouse couldn't think of anything useful to do with his domain so he's started a blog instead. Let's see how long he can keep this up.

So you voted for the guy and he won. Now that that's done, might as well find out how he stands on the issues, eh?

So long, Glass Pool Inn.

Another piece of Vegas history is soon to meet the wrecking ball. They've got the place fenced up, but I'm gonna try and get some pictures this week if I can.

Update: I did.

Toss off the rest of your day with Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music, an expansive detailing(in Flash! in tree form! with samples!) of the electronic genres from the 1970s to today. While some genres are more fleshed out than others(he admits the project is a work in progress), the guide is both imformative and an amusing read.

Ishkur on Jpop:

Is anyone even surprised that this kind of stuff would come from Japan? That whole country is like Bizarro world. They do everything we do, just in a really strange way.

On Dream Trance:

If there is anyone who is responsible for the complete and thorough pussification of Trance, making it offensively lame to the point where not only newbie ravers but also their soccer moms could enjoy it, it's Robert Miles. "Childen" has the exclusive accolade as being the #1 rave recruitment song of all time. This isn't trance; this is like that crappy background music on the TV listings channel that tells you what's playing on other channels.

[thanks, Justin!]

Speaking of the roots of electronic music, I still haven't heard the new Kraftwerk release. Any opinions?
