I read Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom during breaks from work this week, and it's a hell of a book. Download a copy and see for yourself(if ya like it, the dead tree version is available at amazon).
The closest thing I can think of to Down and Out in style would probably be Peter Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy(otherwise known as some of the best sci-fi I've ever read while at the same time having the worst ending I've encountered in any genre or medium ever, period). In fact, if you haven't read the Night's Dawn books(which I recommend) and are thinking about it, go ahead and tear the last 20 pages from the final volume before you get started; in this case, wondering what happens is a lot better than actually knowing.
Note that the similarities are in style only. Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom doesn't suffer from a horrible ending. Its ending was quite nice.
Anyway, read it, cause I wanna talk about whuffie.
I have read the Night's Dawn series several times, actually. I didn't think the ending was that great, but for the life of me I can't figure out how else I would have ended it. I mean, Hamilton took on one MOTHER of a task with that series. I mean, think about it. In creating the world in which he did, he set the stage for the problems which exacerbated the possession crisis and all of the other subplots (see Villeneuve's Revenge.) Which meant that to resolve the problem he also had to resolve the causation and correllating factors - reduced starflight distaces, dealing with the Kiint, etc...
I did wish for an ending either a little darker or more plausible, but all in all, I think it worked well - I can't very well begrudge Hamilton for not having tastes congruent with mine.
Besides. The whole mess with the Tyrathca wasn't totally resolved...there could be another book or two in there.
That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
