09.03.03: Collide

I've been listening to a lot of Collide, an independent electro-industial band currently on their 3rd full release(in addition to a hell of a remix album). Intense melodic-electronic sounds backed by a strong and steady female vocalist, I'm surprised this band isn't more recognized than they are. They sure beat the hell out of Evanescence.

I've had their current album, Some Kind of Strange, in the cdplayer for a week. Alongside Wolfsheim's excellent Casting Shadows, it stands as one of the best things I've heard this year.

As a bonus, from the limited time I've spent with the rest of their catalog, it's all quality. Hell, go listen for yourself.

(Incidentally, both are artists I might have passed over or missed entirely were it not for p2p file-sharing networks.)

What're you listening to these days?

Check out Hungry Lucy, too. I remember hearing em on mp3.com back in the day, and while their older stuff was good, the newer sounds have really improved.

Not bad. Collide sounds a lot like Curve, so it comes as no surprise that you like them. I remember Hungry Lucy from one of the many New Order tribute albums.

I'm in dire need of new music. Got any other recommendations? I'm usually in the mood for ambient/melodic electronic stuff lately; like Aphex Twin, Autechre, Brothomstates, Mouse on Mars, Boards of Canada, etc. But, anything good will do...

Hmm.. have you heard of Celluoid Mata? A bit different, but you might dig it. Hmm..you use Soulseek at all? (the main page is currently down, but the news site isn't. I've mentioned it before, but it's p2p mostly for indie, underground and undiscovered electronic music. The main client is WinXX, but I believe there's also an OS X client available, tho I haven't tried it. I find new stuff by searching for bands I like, and then browsing the directories of those that have em. Amazon.com's "People who bought this CD also bought.." can be helpful too, try looking up albums you are into and go from there.

I found a great stream called Musical Starstreams. It's right up my alley... Check it.

Cellulouid Mata is OK... A bit too harsh for my palate at the moment though.

I think you would enjoy this Chris. Look for a group called Fisherspooner.

I didn't know you weren't familiar with Musical Starstreams, I've been listening to that off and on for some time.. used to be fall-asleep music, I believe it the same station I listened to back before it was a somafm station. Spacemusic(stream link) is also good.
Other stations in my list these days(all of which I'd be listening to a lot more were it not for the damn firewall at work):
Japan-A-Radio
Kohina
Digital Gunfire
Aural Sedation
Arabix
...and of course somafm.

Yeah, firewall blocking of streams is retarded, even though I understand why they do it. I'd probably be aware of wider variety of music if it weren't for that. Damn network Nazis! I just don't sit in front of a computer as much at home...

I shouldn't complain, though. At least they aren't doing URL filtering. A lot of people can't even visit mefi at the office.
